Only 1 year and 11 months until the end of the world!

Happy New Years, followers! I hope you all had a great holiday (or not if you're atheist or a Jehovah Witness). I had a nice Christmas. We went to Kinkade's in Saint Paul! It was delicious, and they serve wild salmon that aren't genetically modified to be sterile. Also, my New Years was nice. Benito and I spent the whole night listening to The Current's Top 89 Countdown and coloring. So, I decided that I am going to share my opinion of all the songs that were on the countdown. I also predicted #1 (and no, Benito, Gogol Bordello had no chance).
  • #89 was "Terrible Love" by The Nationals -  Blah boring blah.  An awful way to start any countdown.  Please don't put me to sleep!
  • # 88 was "Radioactive" by Kings of Leon - Ok, but it's not like I've heard it a bajillion times or anything.
  • #87 was "Go Do" by Jonsi -  Good song; upbeat, energizing.  It's one of the songs that they use in movies during the I've had an epiphany now I'm going to find my true love scenes.  Go do listen to it.  You'll know what I mean.
  • #86 was "Die by the Drop" by The Dead Weather - Great song, and not just because of Jack White.  It's intense.  The video's extremely creepy though..eeeh.
  • #85 was "White Knuckles" by OK Go - The first time I heard it, I thought it was Prince.  It's catchy, easy to dance to, and has an 80s feel.  I absolutely love it!  OK Go always knows how to wow us.
  • #84 was "Shadow People" by Dr. Dog - I voted for this one!  Great and catchy.  His voice is unique, I think.  I like how this song seems simple and airy, but the lyrics are slightly complex.
  • #83 was "Lost in the World feat. Justin Vernon" by Kanye West - It's hard not to get hooked on this song.  As much as I hate to admit, I like just about every popular song Kanye West sings.  Guilty pleasure, I guess.
  • #82 was "Lasso" by Phoenix - Not the best song by Phoenix, but it doesn't help that they played it all the time.
  • #81 was "Bang Bang Bang feat. Q-Tip and MNDR" by Mark Ronson - Great onomatopoeia song!  I like the beat.  It's easy to sing along to.
  • #80 was "XXXO" by M.I.A - Wow..what happened, M.I.A?  You went from "I fly like paper, get high like planes" to "You're tweeting me like Tweety Bird on your IPhone."  Please, do explain.  Not to mention the stuckability it has on your brain!  Good grief.  I'm sad.
  • #79 was "Sound of Sunshine" by Michael Franti and Spearhead - This song is so happy!  I want to hug every person I see when I listen to this song, and I desperately want it to be summer and have everything smell like suntan lotion!
  • #78 was "Pow Pow" by LCD Soundsystem - Really guys?  Just rip my heart out, why don'tcha!  It's awful, terrible, and repulsive.  It's completely moronic!
  • #77 was "Crash Years" by The New Pornographers - They have great songs!  This one is no exception.  Their name is slightly deterent, but if you heard them, you would never guess their name!
  • #76 was "I Learned the Hard Way" by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - It would have been much better if it didn't get over-played, but it's still fun to sing in the shower.  I give her credit for her unique style and woman-power, soul voice.
  • #75 was "Cousins" by Vampire Weekend - What are they talking about!?!  I don't care!  This song rocks!  Come back to Minnesota, Vampire Weekend!
  • #74 was "Gaudy Side of Town" by Gayngs - Relaxing, nice, but if I were to rename their band, I'd call them The New Pornographers.
  • #73 was "In Sleep" by Lissie - I love this song!  I like her voice, it's sort of twangy yet soft and feminine.
  • #72 was "Giving up the Gun" by Vampire Weekend - Not my favorite song, but at least I get what they're saying.  They're very symbollic.
  • #71  was "Tall Boy" by Har Mar Superstar - Love the band name, not so much the song, though.  Are they gay?  If they are, then the song's better.
  • #70 was "Organ Donor" by Jeremy Messersmith - This man is a genius; an attractive, adorable, genius!  I was listening to The Local Show, and they talked about how a lot of artists now are telling a story in their albums instead of just throwing out similar hits.  So true for Jeremy Messersmith, and it works!  This song is interesting, catchy, with captivating, mysterious lyrics, not to mention Jeremy Messersmith is the cutest thing since sliced bread!  I'm considering getting his album!
  • #69 was "Bang Pop" by Free Energy - I see a theme of onomatopoeia in 2010.  This is a bob your head, sing along loudly kind of song.  Catchy and fun!
  • #68 was "Victory" by Trampled by Turtles - I saw these guys live at the fair.  They can make a fiddle and bluegrass look more hip than Snuggies!  They're intense, lively, and great live, unlike some bands.  I'd consider this the best song on their Palomino album.
  • #67 was "Beat the Devil's Tattoo" by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - If Bob Dylan and Jack White had a baby!
  • #66 was "The Only One" by The Black Keys - With their repetitive refrain, and sweet, yet rock-worthy lyrics, The Black Keys draw you in with an unconventional love song.
  • #65 was "Dillinger Eyes" - A completely different song from any other track on his album, yet it's just as good!  I don't know how he does it!
  • #64 was "Audience" by Cold War Kids - This song is very catchy, and the piano is great!
  • #63 was "Sick of You" by Cake - I think the lyrics make this song.  Everyone can relate to them.
  • #62 was "Boyfriend" by Best Coast - I loved this song the first time I heard it.  Her voice is dreamy and relaxed.  I love the Californian, surf feel she gives to her songs.
  • #61 was "You Must be Out of Your Mind" by The Magnetic Field - Not my favorite.  They sing too low, and slightly boring.
  • #60 was "Zebra" by Beach House - This song is dreamy, peaceful, and sweet.  The lyrics are passionate and so is her voice.
  • #59 was "Odessa" by Caribou - The music is bizarre, the lyrics are bizarre.  I love it!
  • #58 was "I Walked" by Sufjan Stevens - I don't remember hearing this song...So I don't have much to say, but apparently some people like it.
  • #57 was "Half Light II (No Celebration)" by Arcade Fire - Arcade Fire did really well in 2010!  I really enjoy this song.  Not all their songs are great, but this one is.  I think I have a thing for back up kid singers in songs.
  • #56 was "City With No Children" by Arcade Fire -  It starts out kinda boring, but then it gets more energetic.  I love the steady flow of this song.
  • #55 was "VCR" by The XX - This song is not only amazing, but the lyrics are sweet and very touching.  This song has an indie, cutesy flair.  It definitely makes The XX a new band worth checking out.
  • #54 was "Written in Reverse" by Spoon - I don't like his screamy thing he does.  If he didn't do that, this song would be great. The intense piano-banging makes this song interesting, though.
  • #53 was "Norway" by Beach House - Another intriguing song by Beach House.  I can't believe I didn't give more attention to this band!
  • #52 was "Congratulations" by MGMT - The Hipster's essential guide to music!  The music in this song is warm and airy, and this song is very likable.  It's not as indie or interesting as "Kids", but it's definitely worthy of attention.
  • #51 was "Horchata" by Vampire Weekend - Another one I voted for!  I love the lyrics to this song.  The juxtaposition of winter/summer, warm/cold definitely work for me, not to mention the xylophone and catchy tune.  "Winter's cold is too much to handle/pincher crabs that pinch at your sandals" God!  This song works for me!
  • #50 was "Swim Until You Can't See Land" by Frightened Rabbit - You think a band with this name would be a little bit more creative with their music, but I guess not.  This song is ok . . . I guess.
  • #49 was "Spanish Pipedream" by The Avett Brothers - I hated this song at first, but then it grew on me.  Not the best song by them, but it's catchy.  You just have to give it awhile.  I'd say it's foot-tapping good.
  • #48 was "On Melancholy Hill" by Gorillaz - Great live, great on the radio, great great great!  Dance-worthy, sing-worthy, blast in your car-worthy!  Definitely one of my favorites from Plastic Beach.  Gorillaz always knows how to throw out a hit,  more like a bunch of hits!
  • #47 was "That Western Skyline" by Dawes - Dawes has a bittersweet sound.  This songs is honest, relaxed, and charming.
  • #46 was "Crown on the Ground" by Sleigh Bells - Doesn't this song make you want to get up and dance!  Well, it makes me want to.  I love it!
  • #45 was "Shutterbug" by Big Boi - This song, on the other hand, makes me want to sit down and pout.
  • #44 was "Cold War" by Janelle Monae - This got on there instead of Wondaland!  I'm insulted!
  • #43 was "From Above" by Ben Folds and Nick Hornby - I really like this song.  I like that they say what everyone is thinking, but is too afraid to say.  Plus, it's a good song; good rhythm.  They never get together, though!  How sad! God.
  • #42 was "Not the Kid" by Communist Daughter - My life story in song form.  I love when songs have great lyrics and a great beat.  It's very rare, but Communist Daughter hit the target!
  • #41 was "Down by the Water" by The Decemberists - Eh..played it too much, not that great.  It should trade places with 42.
  • #40 was "Sinister Kid" by The Black Keys - This song is so catchy!  I love the intro and I love it all the way to the end.  Plus, sinister is my favorite adjective.  It makes me sound smart!
  • #39 was "I Can Change" by LCD Soundsystem - Much better!  A bajillion times better than "Pow Pow".  I actually like this song.
  • #38 was "Cameras" by Matt and Kim - I love the instrumentals in this song.  It's very unique and creative.
  • #37 was "Basic Space" by The XX - Another amazing song by the new band!  They're definitely talented.  This song has delicate undertones, and a catchy beat.
  • #36 was "Beg Steal or Borrow" by Ray LaMontagne and The Pariah Dogs - Let's just say that if I hear this song one more time, I might puke.  I'm so sick of it!
  • #35 was "Violet!" by Jeremy Messersmith - This song is also completely different and unique to his album.  It has an uplifting, optimistic tone and catchy lyrics.
  • #34 was "A Girl, a Boy, and a Graveyard" by Jeremy Messersmith - This song is quiet and mellow with a hint of melancholy.  It's almost a complete 180 from "Violet!".
  • #33 was "Mouthful of Diamonds" by Phantogram - Talk about not knowing what artists mean in their lyrics.  I think having a bunch of diamonds in my mouth would hurt, and I can't imagine they taste very good either.  Regardless, this song is still great!
  • #32 was "O.N.E" by Yeasayer - Great song!  I love it!  I love it!  I love it!  In my opinion, it's one of the best of 2010.  The beat is fun and different, and the lyrics are easy to sing along with.  The song is a rollercoaster and changes.  I love it!  I really do.
  • #31 was "Laredo" by Band of Horses - This is a genuine song.  The lyrics are heart-felt, and the vocals match the tone.  This song reminds me of a sunny, summer day.
  • #30 was "The Best Day" by Atmosphere - Are they talking about my life?  It seems like it.  The cool thing about this song is that I'm sure that's what everyone else wondered after the first time they heard this song.  Not only does Atmosphere spin out good hits, Atmosphere somehow manages to write lyrics that everyone can relate to.  I love that Atmosphere seems to always be thinking about the audience it makes music for.
  • #29 was "Rhinestone Eyes" by Gorillaz - This is the most badass song of 2010 for sure!  I always feel intimidating in my little bug when I crank this song up.  It has great bass!  It was great live too!
  • #28 was "Ambling Alp" by Yeasayer - Benito liked this song by Yeasayer better.  It's almost completely different from "O.N.E," but it's just as good!
  • #27 was "The Ghost Inside" by Broken Bells - This song took time for me to like.  They played it a lot, but I never got sick of it.  It's a decent song, but I can't understand what they're saying!
  • #26 was "Howlin' For You" by The Black Keys - This is one of my favorite songs by The Black Keys!  I love the da da da da part!  This song has to be listened to at a louder decible; anything low would be a crime.  This is also an unconventional love song, and somehow, The Black Keys manage to make love songs likable.
  • #25 was "Carries On" by Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros - This song is amazing!  It starts out gentle and quiet, then the choir chimes in passionately.  The soulful choir makes it almost impossibe not to sing along . . . very loudly.
  • #24 was "This Too Shall Pass" by OK Go - I love the piano in this song, and how the song goes up and down and flings you around.  Another great one by OK Go, but I can't say that I'm surprised!
  • #23 was "Tightrope feat. Big Boi" by Janelle Monae - This one is better than "Cold War," but it's nowhere near as good as "Wondaland" and that one didn't make the countdown!  Ugh.
  • #22 was "Running With the Wolves" by Cloud Cult - I love the passion that Cloud Cult brings to music.  The lyrics have great imagery that match the instrumentals.  I definitely love this song, and I think many people can relate to this song.
  • #21 was "Winter Winds" by Mumford and Sons -  I feel like this was on last year's countdown.  I could be wrong though.  Regardless, this song is great, of course!  It's Mumford and Sons.  What do you expect?!  The trumpet is really nice in this song.  It's a nice song to cuddle up under a blanket and listen to on a cold winter night.
  • #20 was "Conversation 16" by The National - This song makes me wonder. The lyrics confuse me, but I really like this song.  The song has a bittersweet, melancholy tone to it which makes the lyrics seem more meaniful, even though I don't know what they mean.  Good grief.
  • #19 was "The Chaconne" by Dessa - Her voice is so wistful.  I don't even know if this is supposed to be a sad song, but it makes me want to cry!  It's a very pretty song, however.  I like it.
  • #18 was "Freefallin'" by Atmosphere - Seriously?  Is Atmosphere stalking me?  This song has some truth in it, although, a really crappy job can make people do crazy things, so it might not be a "good" problem to have.  I like how this song makes you think in a different way, and look at your situation in a different light.
  • #17 was "When My Time Comes" by Dawes - This song is a good song, except that it gets stuck in your head for a long time.  The lyrics are very reflective, and I like that about this song.
  • #16 was "You'll Be Bright" by Cloud Cult - Another deep, heartfelt song by Cloud Cult that is about wanting to do something more.  I see a theme developing with them, and I love it! Great song, great message!  Very true.
  • #15 was "Bloodbuzz Ohio" by The National - This is a weird song.  I don't think bees could carry anyone.  This song is a flop, in my opinion.  They're trying to defy the laws of physics.  Shame on them.
  • #14 was "Airplanes" by Local Natives - I love the "Mooooooo oooo" in the beginning.  The morning DJs on The Current apparently liked doing that when they listened to this song.  Besides the beginning, this songs work.  If you just read the lyrics without hearing the song, you'd think this song was extremely lame, but somehow they manage to manipulate the lyrics to work and fit with the song.  Good job, Local Natives!
  • #13 was "Ready to Start" by Arcade Fire - The beat to this song is really catchy.  This is probably one of my favorites by Arcade Fire, and it definitely deserves its spot on top 15.
  • #12 was "The High Road" by Broken Bells -  I love this song!  It's very mystifying, and it's a great song to turn up on a bright, summer day.  I wish it was summer . . . The best songs come out in the summer.
  • #11 was "The Suburbs" by Arcade Fire - Another good song by Arcade Fire!  I don't know what it has to do with suburbs, but I don't care.  This song is catchy, and I love the piano in the background.
  • #10 was "Dixon's Girl" by Dessa - This song is great!  The circusy-sounding music is unique, and the story of this song is interesting.  Definitely in the top 10 on my list too!
  • #9 was "January Wedding" by The Avett Brothers -  Aww.  What a cute song!  I usually hate cutesy songs, but this one is an exception.
  • #8 was "Tighten Up" by The Black Keys - I guess The Black Keys talk about love a lot.  Either way, this is still a good song.  Their Brothers album got the attention it deserved in 2010.  Way to go, guys!
  • #7 was "White Blank Page" by Mumford and Sons - This is probably the only song by Mumford and Sons that I know by heart, yet it's not my favorite.  It's a good song, but it's not the greatest one by them, although for them it's still better than any other band's not-so-great song.
  • #6 was "Forget You" by Cee Lo - This is definitely one of the most popular songs of 2010.  It's catchy, has a relatable message, and it's fun to sing along to.  Benito said that his album sort of sounds like Gnarls Barkley, and I agree.
  • #5 was "The Cave" by Mumford and Sons - They're real attention whores!  Geez.  I guess they deserved it, though.  This song is also delightful.
  • #4 was "Wait So Long" by Trampled by Turtles - This was a really big surprise for me.  It's not that this song is a bad song, it's just not the best song from their Palomino record.  I think "Victory" was the best, but apparently some people disagreed.
  • #3 was "Dance Yrself Clean" by LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem always spins out the most interesting songs.  This song, much unlike "Pow Pow," is one of my favorites of 2010.  It was played on The Current just enough for me to fall in love with it, but not so much that I have nothing good to say about it.  In fact, I sort of forgot about it until I heard it on the countdown.
  • #2 was . . . you guessed it "Little Lion Man" by Mumford and Sons - They do not know how to share!  This is my favorite song by them!  I'm glad it got the number 2 spot.  It's crazy to think that a year ago, they came to Minnesota and had a pathetically small crowd, and now, their recent concert sold out in a blink of an eye.  It's amazing what can change so quickly.  I think Mumford and Sons are an inspiring example to all budding bands out there.
  • #1 was . . . I GUESSED IT "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence and the Machine - YES!  I guessed correctly!  Anyway, it's clear to see why this was number one other than the fact that they used it in the Eat, Pray, Love ads.  It's a likable song.  It has a great beat, and it has interesting lyrics.  And, if I'm not mistaken, I think Florence and the Machine is newer to music.  Well, from MGMT and me, congratulations!
And Happy 2011 to all of my followers from every part of the world!  I hope you all have an exciting year, and I hope my blog posts are part of it.

The word of the day was lumps.  I think you might be able to see an over-all theme with my word of the days.

Á bientot!
